PART 2 — THE TUNNEL NO ONE REMEMBERED

Bishop didn’t argue with the sheriff.

He simply thanked him.

That confused everyone.

Then he climbed off his motorcycle and walked back to Walter.

The old engineer spread the brittle blueprint across the sidecar.

“This maintenance tunnel was built after the avalanche of ’71,” Walter said. “It runs beneath the ridge and comes out less than half a mile from the children’s center.”

A deputy overheard him and laughed.

“That tunnel collapsed years ago.”

Walter shook his head.

“No.”

“They closed the entrance.”

“They never filled it.”

Bishop studied the map.

“If you’re right…”

“We can carry everything through.”

Within minutes, the bikers unloaded their motorcycles.

Instead of revving engines or confronting deputies, they formed a human chain.

Blankets.

Medical oxygen.

Portable dialysis supplies.

Insulin coolers.

Wheelchairs.

Boxes of toys.

Every item passed carefully from hand to hand.

The television crews looked confused.

This wasn’t the angry showdown they’d expected.

Then Walter asked for the microphone.

One reporter handed it over.

“My name is Walter Brooks,” he said quietly.

“I designed this highway.”

“And Sheriff Mercer knows exactly who I am.”

The sheriff’s face stiffened.

Walter reached into the map tube and removed another document.

An inspection report.

Signed only six months earlier.

It showed the emergency tunnel remained structurally sound.

More importantly…

It ordered the entrance to remain unlocked during declared weather emergencies.

Walter looked directly at the sheriff.

“Who ordered those gates welded shut?”

Silence.

The reporters immediately turned their cameras away from the bikers…

…and toward the sheriff.

A county maintenance supervisor standing near the snowplows suddenly lowered his head.

“I received that order,” he admitted.

“From the sheriff’s office.”

Walter closed his eyes.

“I warned you children could die if that tunnel was blocked.”

The live broadcast changed instantly.

The story was no longer about dangerous bikers.

It was about why an emergency evacuation route had been illegally sealed.
