PART 3: The Promise Made Seven Years Earlier

Eli reached into the pocket of his walker.

“I found something else.”

He handed Ox a folded envelope.

Across the front, written in faded black ink, were only four words:

For Wade Mercer Only.

Ox stared silently.

Only one person had ever called him Wade.

Daniel Brooks.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

“If Eli is giving you this… then I failed.”

“Someone inside the department sold my investigation.”

“I couldn’t trust another badge.”

“So I trusted the only man who once saved my life.”

Ox’s jaw tightened.

Years earlier, before either man had gray hair, Ox had pulled Deputy Brooks from a burning patrol cruiser after a highway crash.

From that day on…

The deputy and the biker became unlikely friends.

Very few people ever knew.

Tucked behind the letter was a tiny flash drive.

And a list.

Not of criminals.

Of police officers.

Business owners.

County officials.

People secretly helping the trafficking network Daniel had uncovered.

The evidence Daniel spent years collecting.

Evidence he never lived to reveal.

Two black SUVs suddenly appeared at the far end of the highway.

Bear looked through his binoculars.

“They’re coming.”

Ox didn’t even turn around.

He simply slipped the flash drive into his vest.

Then he looked at all forty-two bikers.

“Today…”

“…we finish what Daniel started.”

Six months later…

Federal investigators announced one of the largest corruption arrests in the state’s history.

More than thirty officials were indicted.

Dozens of missing children were found alive.

Daniel Brooks was officially cleared of every false accusation.

His name was restored with full honors.

At the dedication ceremony, Eli stood without his walker.

His braces were still there.

But he walked across the stage on his own.

He pinned Deputy Brooks’ restored badge onto a memorial display.

Then he looked toward Ox.

“You kept your promise.”

The giant biker smiled through tears.

“No, son.”

“Your dad did.”

“I was just carrying it for him.”

And for the first time in seven years…

The secret that had lived inside one tarnished badge finally came home.
