A “Wheel of Fortune” contestant came within a hair of the $100,000 mark — and solved her final puzzle so quickly that even host Ryan Seacrest seemed stunned.

Vonda Ulfig of Pataskala, Ohio, delivered one of the fastest Bonus Round solves of the season during the January 30 episode, correctly answering the puzzle almost as soon as the clock began ticking. By the end of the night, she had racked up $99,740 — just $260 shy of six figures.

Ulfig, who earned a doctorate in business administration in 2019, describes herself as a lifelong learner. Her appearance on the show also marked a personal triumph. In 2017, she was hospitalized with Acute Intermittent Porphyria, a rare inherited blood disorder. Years later, she stood center stage under the bright lights, ready to spin.

She competed against Arianne Kelly of Oak Lawn, Illinois, and Drew Berman of Ridgefield, Connecticut. Kelly, a community theater enthusiast with a love of music, grabbed the early advantage by solving the first Toss-Up. Berman, who once bicycled around the globe for a year, answered the second.

Berman built momentum by cracking the “Never Have I Ever” puzzle — “Taken a Bad Selfie in the Bathroom” — collecting $11,250 and taking the lead.

Ulfig got on the board during the “Before & After” round with the quirky phrase “Look on the Bright Side of Onion Rings,” bringing her total to $11,600. She also landed on the Snowglobe wedge, adding $4,500. The unusual puzzle prompted a playful reaction from Seacrest, who admitted the phrase sounded odd — but correct it was.

The game tightened when Berman nearly completed the next puzzle but hit Bankrupt. Ulfig seized the opportunity, solving “Standing on the Riverbank” to win a Danube River cruise, boosting her total to $19,970.

In the Triple Toss-Up round, Berman secured the first $2,000 puzzle, while Kelly claimed the next two, padding her score with $4,000.

With just one letter remaining in the final puzzle, Ulfig buzzed in and solved “Texting In All Caps,” adding $4,950 and finishing the main game with $24,740 — enough to advance to the Bonus Round.

Kelly exited with $5,000, while Berman left with $13,250.

Ulfig brought her husband, Mark, and their two children for support. For the Bonus Round, she selected the category “Food & Drink.” After the standard letters R, S, T, L, N and E were revealed, she chose H, C, M and O.

Before viewers could fully process the blanks, Ulfig confidently answered, “Spinach Quiche.”

The solve came so quickly that Seacrest remarked it appeared she had the answer in mind before the countdown truly began. When he opened the envelope, it revealed a $75,000 prize — pushing her grand total to $99,740.

Seacrest celebrated the near-six-figure win with a fist bump to Mark and applause for Ulfig’s lightning-fast thinking.

Fans online were equally impressed, praising her composure and sharp letter choices. Many noted how decisively she handled the final puzzle, calling it one of the smoothest Bonus Round performances in recent memory.

For Ulfig, the moment was more than a game show victory. After years of academic achievement and overcoming serious health challenges, she walked away with nearly $100,000 — and a memory that will last far longer than the spin of any wheel.
