PART 2 — THE CLASSIFIED LEAK
PART 2
Nobody spoke as the three agents entered the ballroom.
They weren’t dressed alike.
That was the first thing I noticed.
One wore a dark suit.
Another carried a slim black case.
The third had the posture of someone who had spent years around military personnel.
They didn’t look at the guests.
They looked at me.
I stood.
James immediately moved aside.
One of the agents approached.
“Admiral Brooks.”
I nodded.
“Status?”
“All exits secured.”
My father’s face changed.
“Exits?”
Olivia stared at me.
“What is happening?”
I looked at her.
“Something that has nothing to do with the family reunion.”
Then the agent handed me a tablet.
A photograph appeared.
The same man who had left his table moments earlier was moving rapidly toward a service corridor.
I recognized him.
So did James.
His expression hardened.
“That’s Martin Hale.”
I nodded.
“Deputy director of procurement at Atlantic Defense Systems.”
James looked at me.
“He’s here?”
“He was invited by Father.”
My father slowly stood.
“I’ve known Martin for twenty years.”
“Then you may want to sit down.”
The room became tense.
I walked toward the ballroom’s center.
“Everyone remains where they are.”
Olivia looked offended.
“You can’t order my guests around.”
I turned toward her.
“Tonight, I can.”
She fell silent.
The agents began checking the room.
No shouting.
No chaos.
Just controlled movement.
That was what frightened everyone.
The investigation had started weeks earlier.
A classified Navy intelligence assessment had been transmitted outside authorized channels.
The document contained information concerning naval readiness, procurement vulnerabilities, and an upcoming security operation.
Someone had accessed the material using legitimate credentials.
That meant the leak wasn’t coming from some random outsider.
It was coming from inside the system.
Someone trusted.
Someone with access.
Someone who knew exactly how intelligence moved.
My team had followed the digital trail.
It led to three separate contractors.
Then two senior officials.
And finally…
Martin Hale.
But the evidence wasn’t enough.
We needed him to reveal the final connection.
That’s why I had come tonight.
Not for dinner.
Not for Olivia.
Not even for my parents.
For the person sitting somewhere in that ballroom who believed they had escaped detection.
An agent suddenly touched his earpiece.
“Ma’am.”
I turned.
“The subject has stopped.”
“Where?”
“Service corridor.”
I looked at James.
“Stay here.”
He nodded.
I walked toward the corridor.
Then Olivia suddenly called my name.
“Hannah.”
I stopped.
She looked different now.
The confidence was gone.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I looked back.
“Would you have believed me?”
She had no answer.
James stepped toward her.
“Olivia…”
She looked at him.
“How long did you know?”
“About her rank?”
He hesitated.
“Three years.”
Her face collapsed.
“You knew?”
“I knew she was senior command.”
“You let me make fun of her?”
James looked uncomfortable.
“I told you more than once to stop asking questions about her work.”
Olivia slowly sat down.
I continued toward the corridor.
Then my phone vibrated again.
A new message appeared.
HARD EVIDENCE CONFIRMED. SECONDARY HANDLER IDENTIFIED.
I stopped.
Secondary handler.
That changed everything.
I turned toward the ballroom.
My eyes moved across the hundreds of guests.
If there was a second person…
They were still inside.
And suddenly I realized the person we had been hunting all night…
Might not be Martin Hale at all.
Someone in my own family had just looked directly at me.
And smiled.
