PART 2 — The Fire Behind the Fence

Garrett reached the burning grass before anyone else.

The bottle rocket had landed only a few feet from two red gasoline cans sitting beside an old lawn tractor.

Without slowing down, he kicked the flaming weeds away from the fuel, grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher, and emptied it across the ground.

A cloud of white powder swallowed the flames.

Silence followed.

Then another firework exploded overhead.

The neighborhood, which had been cheering moments earlier, suddenly realized how close they had come to disaster.

Inside the garage, Lily still trembled beneath the bright pink headphones.

Michael knelt beside his daughter.

“Sweetheart…”

She threw her arms around his neck.

“I got scared.”

“I know.”

“I heard the loud booms.”

“I know.”

She buried her face against his shoulder.

“I couldn’t find home.”

Michael looked toward Garrett.

“What happened?”

Garrett leaned the empty extinguisher against the wall.

“I was putting tools away.”

“Brutus started barking.”

“He never barks unless something’s wrong.”

“I came outside and found Lily curled up behind my workbench.”

Michael glanced at the enormous dog.

Brutus had quietly laid down beside Lily, keeping several feet away as though he understood she was frightened.

The same dog Michael had spent months calling dangerous hadn’t barked at the child.

He had guarded her.

Michael noticed something else.

The garage looked nothing like he’d imagined.

One corner held motorcycles under repair.

Another contained shelves lined with helmets.

Against the far wall stood a neatly organized children’s area.

Coloring books.

Puzzle boxes.

A small beanbag chair.

The pink headphones.

“What’s all this?” Michael asked.

Garrett smiled faintly.

“My daughter.”

Michael looked around.

“I’ve never seen her.”

“You couldn’t.”

Garrett’s smile faded.

“She passed away three years ago.”

The room fell quiet.

“She had severe autism.”

“Fireworks terrified her.”

“So did thunderstorms.”

Garrett gently picked up the headphones.

“These were hers.”

“When Lily came in crying…”

“…I knew exactly what she needed.”

Michael couldn’t find words.

For two years he had invented an entire story about the man next door.

None of it had been true.

Outside, neighbors gathered after hearing about the small fire.

Someone noticed the baseball bat still lying near the garage door.

Another looked at Michael.

“Were you…”

Michael nodded slowly.

“I thought…”

He couldn’t finish the sentence.

Garrett spared him.

“You thought I was hurting her.”

Michael lowered his head.

“I was wrong.”

Before Garrett could answer, Brutus suddenly stood again.

His ears lifted.

He stared toward the street.

Then bolted out of the garage.

“Brutus!” Garrett called.

The dog ignored him.

Seconds later, tires screeched.

A little boy chasing a sparkler had run into the road.

Brutus reached him first.

The massive dog slammed sideways into the child, knocking him back onto the grass just as a pickup truck sped past.

The truck’s horn blared.

The driver never even realized how close he had come.

Parents screamed.

The little boy stared at Brutus with wide eyes.

The giant dog simply licked his face.

For the second time that night…

the neighborhood watched the “dangerous” dog save a child.
