PART 3: The Last Ride Before Sunset

Emma carefully handed Wade her juice.

“Ready?”

He smiled.

“Together.”

They peeled back the foil lids at the same time.

One sip.

Then another.

Emma laughed.

“You waited.”

“Told you I would.”

Bear quietly wiped at one eye before anyone noticed.

Later, while Emma returned upstairs, Bear walked beside me.

“How long has Wade been doing this?”

I smiled.

“The first time he came…”

“…he was delivering stuffed animals after a charity ride.”

Emma had asked whether the scary biker would ever come back.

Wade promised he would visit every Thursday.

He never missed one.

Not during thunderstorms.

Not after surgery on his own shoulder.

Not even after breaking three ribs in a motorcycle accident.

He always came.

Always brought apple juice.

Always left after sunset.

A week later, the Black River Brotherhood arrived again.

Not three motorcycles.

Thirty-eight.

Every saddlebag carried coloring books, blankets, puzzles, and stuffed animals.

Bear climbed off his Harley carrying a cooler.

Inside…

…were dozens of small cups of apple juice.

Emma laughed so hard the entire hallway joined her.

Soon every child on the oncology floor had a biker sitting beside them sharing juice before treatment.

The nurses started calling Thursdays “Promise Day.”

Months later, Emma’s condition worsened.

She asked to see Wade one last time.

He sat beside her bed holding the final cup of apple juice between them.

“You kept every promise,” she whispered.

Wade squeezed her hand gently.

“So did you.”

She smiled.

“I wasn’t scared.”

After Emma passed away, Wade returned to the hospital the following Thursday.

Then the Thursday after that.

And every Thursday since.

Not because anyone expected him.

But because another frightened child was always waiting for someone willing to keep a simple promise.

Bear never again questioned why his brother disappeared every Thursday.

Whenever someone in the club asked where Wade had gone, Bear simply smiled and answered,

“Keeping his appointment.”

He never needed to explain further.
