PART 3 — THE SECRET LENА’S MOTHER LEFT BEHIND
The pounding on the door stopped.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the coffee shop lights flickered.
Lena pressed herself against my side.
“Don’t let them take me.”
“I won’t.”
Mark looked toward the rear entrance.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.”
I stared at him.
“Then start explaining.”
He shook his head.
“You need to get the girl out of here.”
“Why?”
“Because Michael didn’t disappear.”
“I already figured that out.”
Mark looked at me with genuine fear.
“He came back.”
That sentence changed the room.
Lena looked up.
“My daddy?”
Mark nodded reluctantly.
“He was alive.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
Mark’s voice cracked.
“He contacted me three days ago.”
I stepped closer.
“What did he say?”
“He told me to keep Lena moving.”
“Why?”
“Because someone inside the government was looking for her.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
I looked at the photograph again.
Michael Hayes had spent years working in intelligence.
If he had disappeared intentionally, there had to be a reason.
And if someone was searching for his daughter, the reason was probably bigger than a family dispute.
Another message appeared on my phone.
DO NOT TRUST LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked toward the windows.
The black SUVs were still outside.
No uniforms.
No badges.
Just men standing beneath the snow.
One of them lifted his phone.
Then pointed directly toward our table.
“They found us,” Mark whispered.
Lena began trembling.
I crouched beside her.
“Listen to me.”
She looked at me.
“You did nothing wrong.”
She nodded.
“And nobody is taking you anywhere without your permission.”
Mark suddenly moved toward the kitchen.
I stopped him.
“Where are you going?”
“There is another exit.”
“Then we’re all going.”
He stared at me.
“You trust me?”
“No.”
A faint smile crossed my face.
“But right now, you’re the only person who knows where the other exit is.”
We moved through the kitchen.
The owner followed us.
Rex stayed beside Lena.
Outside, the wind was brutal.
Snow covered the alley.
We hurried toward an old service road behind the building.
Then a vehicle appeared at the far end.
Mark stopped.
“They’re here.”
I looked around.
No easy escape.
Then Lena pulled my sleeve.
“I know somewhere.”
“Where?”
“My mommy showed me.”
She pointed toward an abandoned train station across the road.
We ran.
Inside the station, Lena led us beneath a broken staircase.
She reached behind a loose brick and pulled out a small metal box.
Mark stared.
“Michael’s emergency box.”
Lena nodded.
“He said I could open it if I was ever alone.”
I opened the box.
Inside was a flash drive.
A photograph.
And a folded military document.
The photograph showed Michael standing beside several senior officers.
One face made my blood run cold.
I recognized him immediately.
A former intelligence commander who had been forced into retirement after a classified investigation.
I unfolded the document.
At the bottom was Michael’s signature.
Above it was one sentence:
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, THE EVIDENCE IS WITH MY DAUGHTER.
I looked at Lena.
“What evidence?”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then the station door opened.
Footsteps echoed through the darkness.
Mark whispered one word.
“Run.”
Rex stood between Lena and the entrance.
I gripped the metal box.
The footsteps came closer.
Then a man’s voice echoed through the station.
“Lena.”
She froze.
Because she recognized the voice.
Not her uncle’s.
Not a stranger’s.
Her father’s.
And from the expression on her face, I knew the truth we’d been searching for was finally standing on the other side of that door.
But there was one question I couldn’t stop asking myself:
If Michael Hayes was alive…
Why had he allowed his own daughter to believe he was dead?
