PART 3 — PHANTOM 7 WAS NEVER THE TARGET

The auditorium doors locked automatically.

Every officer was instructed to remain seated.

Nobody spoke.

The security officer moved quickly toward the stage.

“Who accessed the archive?” Mercer asked.

The officer looked at his tablet.

“We’re still tracing the terminal.”

Victor suddenly laughed.

It wasn’t a confident laugh.

It was nervous.

Almost relieved.

“You’re making a mistake,” he said.

I turned toward him.

“What mistake?”

“You think this is about me.”

I studied his face.

“What do you mean?”

Victor looked toward Mercer.

“You brought her here because you think she’s the target.”

Mercer said nothing.

Victor’s eyes moved back to me.

“She isn’t.”

A chill moved through me.

“Then who is?”

Victor didn’t answer.

Major Shaw suddenly reached into his jacket.

Three officers immediately drew their weapons.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Shaw froze.

Slowly, he removed a phone.

“I’m not armed.”

The security officer took it.

A notification flashed across the screen.

One message.

PHANTOM 7 COMPROMISED.

My stomach tightened.

Mercer looked at me.

“That’s impossible.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“What?”

I stared at the screen.

“It’s not impossible.”

I remembered the missions.

The false identities.

The erased records.

The unexplained operational failures.

The people who had known just enough to interfere.

For years, I had assumed the leaks were coming from individual officers.

Maybe I had been wrong.

“Someone isn’t trying to expose Phantom 7,” I said.

Mercer watched me carefully.

“Then what are they trying to do?”

I looked toward the locked auditorium doors.

“They’re trying to activate her.”

The room went silent.

Victor’s expression changed.

“You know what Black Directive means.”

I looked at him.

“You shouldn’t.”

His eyes widened.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The projector behind the stage turned on by itself.

A single image appeared.

A black lantern.

Beneath it was one line of text.

PHANTOM 7 — MISSION STATUS: ACTIVE.

Every officer stared at the screen.

Mercer whispered my name.

“Mara.”

I didn’t answer.

Another line appeared.

PRIMARY TARGET: VICTOR HALE.

Victor stepped backward.

“No.”

The projector changed again.

SECONDARY TARGET: COLONEL JONAH MERCER.

Mercer immediately reached for his sidearm.

Then the screen went black.

A countdown appeared.

09:59

Nine minutes and fifty-nine seconds.

The auditorium erupted.

Officers stood.

Security teams moved.

Phones began ringing.

I remained completely still.

Victor looked at me.

“You knew this was coming.”

“No.”

“But you knew something was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Mercer stepped beside me.

“Can you stop it?”

I looked at the countdown.

“Maybe.”

“How?”

I pointed toward the projector.

“Someone is using an old Phantom authentication sequence.”

Mercer frowned.

“Can you override it?”

I shook my head.

“Not from here.”

“Then where?”

I looked toward the ceiling.

“There’s an emergency command terminal underneath this building.”

Mercer understood immediately.

“You mean the old operations room.”

“Yes.”

Victor suddenly spoke.

“I know where it is.”

I turned toward him.

Everyone did.

Victor looked at me.

His voice was barely audible.

“I helped build it.”

I stared at him.

“You never told me.”

“You were never supposed to know.”

The countdown continued.

08:42

Mercer looked between us.

“Then we’re out of time.”

I picked up the red folder.

“Not yet.”

I turned toward the side exit.

Mercer followed.

Victor hesitated.

Then came with us.

As we reached the hallway, my secure phone vibrated.

One message appeared.

No sender.

No number.

Only four words:

YOU WERE NEVER THE ASSET.

I stopped walking.

Mercer looked at me.

“What does it say?”

I showed him.

His face changed.

Victor looked over my shoulder.

Then whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Mara…”

I turned.

“What?”

He stared at the message.

“That isn’t a warning.”

“What is it?”

Victor looked toward the dark corridor leading beneath the auditorium.

“It’s a confirmation.”

The countdown continued somewhere behind us.

07:59

And for the first time since I had been given the call sign Phantom 7, I realized something terrifying.

I hadn’t been hiding from the people hunting me.

I had been protecting them from whatever was coming next.
