“The Pitt” season 2 has been one of my most anticipated shows of 2026, and it’s mostly delivered on that promise. It’s easily one of the three best shows of 2026 so far, alongside “Industry” season 4 and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” (what a year for HBO!). But up until now, I haven’t felt that it’s delivered quite the highs as season 1 did.

Tonight, though, HBO’s medical drama just delivered a masterpiece. “5:00 P.M.” gave us an episode that fans of the series have been waiting for all season. It’s not only one of the best episodes of the year, but one of the best episodes of the show to date.

 

This was the ICE episode that “The Pitt” promised

For a while now, showrunners have been promising a storyline that would involve U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Speaking with The Daily Beast back in February, Executive producer John Wells recalled telling HBO execs, “I don’t want to be in a situation where it’s [the ICE story] a surprise.” According to Wells, HBO responded with “Good story. Just make sure it’s balanced, and we’re not just treating the situation as if it doesn’t have other points of view.”

I have to say, if “balanced” was what was promised, I’m not quite sure that’s what was delivered. If “blood-boilingly accurate” is what Wells & Co. were going for, then they absolutely delivered.

The second ICE walks into The Pitt with a patient in need of care, you know it’s not going to end well. Patients are clearing out of the Emergency Department waiting room, nurses are leaving in droves and Robby (Noah Wyle) and Dana (Katherine LaNasa).

But even I couldn’t have anticipated that what would happen next is that Jesse (Ned Bower) would be hauled off for trying to help the suspect that ICE brought in, and that what would proceed is Robby desperately scrambling to find out where one of his own went, and unable to get answers. It was a twist I definitely didn’t see coming, and when it landed, it made me angry without even having time to process what was happening.

Verdict: This is ‘The Pitt’ at its best

Of course, emotional manipulation like this is the hallmark of a good show, but what makes “The Pitt” great is that not only does it deliver powerful moments such as these, but it juggles multiple storylines at once, each with their own ability to lift you or crush you.

This episode delivers on that front as well. While we’re dealing with the impending drama that ICE ultimately brings, we’re coping with the loss of Roxie (Brittany Allen), who finally succumbs to her illness during this episode. That moment is delivered in total silence, with Dr. McKay (Fiona Dourif) absent when she should be there to say goodbye to her patient. It’s as devastating to watch as any moment we’ve seen this season so far.

So, while I’m not sure that “The Pitt” has quite taken the title of show of the year so far from “Industry,” if it ultimately does retain the crown at the end of the season, this will be the episode where that title defence begins. Now, I just have to somehow make it another seven days to see what happens next.
