Just when fans thought they had Outlander all figured out… a hidden truth may have been there all along. Some viewers are now convinced they’ve uncovered a secret spy—someone who’s been quietly watching, waiting, and possibly manipulating events from the shadows. Clues scattered across episodes are starting to connect, turning small moments into something far more suspicious than they first appeared.

Outlander fans expose secret ‘spy’ after ‘shady’ Season 8 twist

Outlander is back with its final season and fans of the historical romance drama are not prepared for it to end.

Season 8 is primarily based on Diana Gabaldon’s ninth Outlander book in the series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, but not even the cast know how it will end after multiple versions of the final scene were filmed.

The final season of the Scottish drama is made up of 10 episodes, with the fourth instalment leaving viewers on the edge of their seats after Brianna MacKenzie (played by Sophie Skelton) was reunited with her brother William (Charles Vandervaart).

Not everyone was pleased to see Brianna, as newcomer Amaranthus Cowden Grey (Carla Woodcock), William’s new love interest, was clearly threatened by her relationship with William.

To put Amaranthus at ease, William told her about the nature of his relationship with Brianna, and that he was not actually the 9th Earl of Ellesmere.

After saying he wanted to renounce the title, Amaranthus proposed he married her so he could abdicate and their firstborn child would become the 10th Earl of Ellesmere.

Amaranthus, the alleged widow of Benjamin Grey (Alex Bhat), and her proposal left fans curious about her true intentions, and they took to Reddit to share their thoughts on what she may be hiding.

One Outlander fan said: “It was really nice to see Brianna and William have a conversation now that they know that their siblings.

“On that storyline, with William and Amaranthus, something is off about her, I can’t tell if she’s just awkward or if she has like ulterior motives.”

Another added: “Amaranthus liking William, so shortly after Ben died. She has shown no signs of grief. Definitely super shady.”

A third shared: “A first son who is a Duke and a second son who is an Earl? I can see this being her sole motivation as well as two sons who outrank her husband who passes his earldom on.”

Another Outlander fanatic commented: “I feel she might be a spy? But I don’t think his cousin sent her as a spy?”

Someone else shared: “Yeah I was wondering this, or if William’s cousin was a spy? She was real quick to close that drawer full of letters.”

Another viewer agreed: “I think she is definitely hiding something!” With another lamenting: “Completely agree re Amaranthus, she jumped to marriage reaaaaal quick.”

A final fan concluded: “Oh your suspicions are def heard. What widow would be that forward to come on to another guy so fast, his cousin no less, too slim shady for me.”

Amaranthus appears in the Outlander books Written in My Own Heart’s Blood and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, becoming a major yet somewhat mysterious romantic interest for William.
