A Mother’s Grief Exploited in the Cruelest Way
In a heartbreaking twist to an already devastating case, the mother of missing teenager Taylor Charlton has been forced to publicly declare her innocence after vicious online trolls wrongly accused her of involvement in her own son’s suspected murder.
The body of 15-year-old Taylor Charlton was tragically recovered from the River Taw in Barnstaple, North Devon, on June 24 after a desperate six-week search that gripped the local community.

Taylor vanished on the evening of May 8, last seen on CCTV walking towards the river. His shoes were found on the riverbank early in the search, sparking immediate fears he had entered the water. A massive operation involving helicopters, sonar, dive teams and hundreds of volunteers battled the area’s treacherous tidal currents for weeks.

On what would have been Taylor’s 15th birthday on May 26, his devastated parents Zoe Harvey and Alex made emotional public appeals, pleading for their boy to come home. The family’s strength moved the entire nation.
‘I Have Nothing to Do With My Son’s Murder!’
Following the arrest of a woman in her 40s on suspicion of murder, cruel trolls began targeting grieving mum Zoe Harvey. In an emotional Facebook post, Zoe hit back: “I am nothing to do with my son’s murder!”
A family friend added: “It was not in fact Taylor’s grieving, heartbroken mum that has been arrested.” The family has also endured sickening mocking messages comparing the tragedy to other cases.
Search and Rescue Efforts
Police and emergency services conducted extensive searches along the River Taw and surrounding areas.
The Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Devon and Cornwall Police arrested a 20-year-old man (released on bail) and a woman in her 40s on suspicion of murder. The force stresses the investigation is at an early stage and has urged the public to stop harmful speculation.
Taylor’s remains were found near Sticklepath. Police continue to appeal for any CCTV or dashcam footage from May 8.
Community in Mourning
The people of Barnstaple came together in force, with vigils, flowers and tributes pouring in for the popular teenager. Yet the family’s pain has been made worse by online harassment.
