SHOCKING DISCOVERY: Foreign Object Found Deep Inside Baby Preston Davey’s Body!
In a case that has shocked the United Kingdom and highlighted serious failures in child safeguarding, former secondary school teacher Jamie Varley, 37, has been sentenced to a whole-life order for the murder and prolonged sexual and physical abuse of 13-month-old Preston Davey. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was convicted of related offences including allowing the death of a child, child cruelty, and sexual assault, receiving a 25-year sentence.
Preston Davey, born on 16 June 2022, was placed into the care of Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley in early 2023 as they pursued adoption. What should have been a safe new home turned into four months of unrelenting horror for the defenseless infant.
A Campaign of Sadistic Abuse
According to evidence presented at Preston Crown Court, Preston suffered at least 40 traumatic injuries during his short time in their care. These included external bruises, internal injuries consistent with forcible penetration and sexual assault, and a healing fracture to his left upper arm. The post-mortem examination determined the cause of death as acute upper airway obstruction — essentially smothering or an object being forced into his mouth.
Varley, who worked as a teacher involved in child safeguarding, recorded numerous indecent videos and photographs of Preston on his phone. Some footage captured the baby being shouted at to stay awake, physically assaulted, and subjected to sexual abuse. Police recovered a significant hoard of this material, which Varley had shared via Snapchat with his partner.
On 27 July 2023, Varley rushed the unconscious child to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Preston was pronounced dead. Varley initially claimed the baby had been left in the bath and found submerged, but evidence contradicted his story.
Investigation and Conviction
The disturbing digital evidence on Varley’s devices played a central role in the prosecution. Investigators found videos and images documenting the abuse, some taken shortly after Preston entered their care. Varley was convicted of murder, multiple counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, child cruelty, making and distributing indecent images, and other charges.
Sentencing Judge Mr Justice Turner described the abuse as “unremitting” and highlighted Varley’s sadistic behavior. Detectives called him an “evil and monstrous individual” who treated the vulnerable baby as his “plaything” for personal gratification.
The case has raised profound questions about how a teacher with safeguarding responsibilities could slip through cracks in the adoption and monitoring systems. Multiple agencies had contact with the family, yet the abuse went undetected until it was too late.
Preston’s biological family and the public have expressed unimaginable grief. Vigils and tributes have honored the little boy whose life was cut tragically short. His smiling photos, widely shared in media coverage, stand in heartbreaking contrast to the suffering he endured.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the need for stronger oversight in adoption processes, especially when involving individuals in positions of trust with children. While Varley will spend the rest of his life in prison, the scars on Preston’s memory and the systemic lessons learned come at an unbearable cost.
