PART 2: The Secret Beneath The Bandage

Ellen watched as Bear removed the final layer of gauze.

His palm was badly injured.

But that wasn’t what made her stop breathing.

Tied around his hand was the black cord.

And attached to it…

was a tiny silver key.

Ellen stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

Bear looked at her.

“From the hospital.”

Her expression changed.

“What hospital?”

“Yours.”

Ellen stepped backward.

“I don’t understand.”

Bear opened the wooden box.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Hospital records.

A folded letter.

And a small velvet pouch.

He pushed the box toward her.

“For six weeks, I’ve been trying to find out who paid your medical bills.”

Ellen froze.

“My insurance did.”

“No.”

Bear shook his head.

“They didn’t.”

He showed her the records.

There were payments made anonymously.

Every one of them covered expenses her insurance had rejected.

Ellen looked up.

“Who?”

Bear didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened the folded letter.

It was from the hospital administrator.

Someone had been using Bear’s name to make the payments.

But Bear had never authorized them.

Someone wanted Ellen to believe that Bear was secretly moving money away from their family.

That’s why she’d noticed strange bank withdrawals.

That’s why Bear had suddenly become distant.

That’s why he had spent six weeks refusing to explain where he was going.

Ellen’s voice trembled.

“You let me think you were leaving me.”

“I needed you to believe it.”

“Why?”

Bear’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because someone was watching you.”

The bikers behind him became completely still.

Bear explained that after Ellen’s treatment, he discovered someone had been accessing her medical information.

Then someone began following her.

He couldn’t prove who it was.

So he started investigating quietly.

The ring wasn’t the real secret.

The ring had been engraved with a tiny number inside the band.

A number connected to an old hospital account.

Bear had thrown it into the river because he knew someone nearby was watching.

He wanted whoever was following them to believe the marriage had finally collapsed.

Ellen stared at him.

“You destroyed twenty-eight years of trust just to make someone believe we were finished?”

Bear nodded.

“I needed them to think you were alone.”

Then one of the bikers opened the wooden box’s hidden compartment.

Inside was a second key.

And beneath it…

a photograph.

Ellen recognized the man immediately.

It was someone she had trusted for years.

Her face went pale.

“Oh my God.”

Bear reached for her hand.

“There’s one more thing you need to know.”

Before he could say it…

a car engine started behind them.

Everyone turned.

A dark sedan was slowly pulling away from the curb.

Bear’s expression hardened.

“That’s him.”
