PART 3: Why Bear Threw Away The Ring
The bikers moved toward the motorcycles.
But Bear stopped them.
“No chasing.”
He looked at Ellen.
“Stay here.”
The sedan disappeared into traffic.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Ellen looked toward the river.
“The ring…”
Bear nodded.
“It wasn’t gone.”
“What?”
He reached into his vest and pulled out a second identical gold band.
Ellen stared.
“The one I threw away was a copy.”
Her mouth fell open.
Bear smiled sadly.
“I needed him to believe the marriage was over.”
Inside the real ring was the tiny engraved number.
The number connected to the hospital account.
And now…
the evidence was safe.
The wooden box contained everything they needed to expose the person who had been manipulating Ellen’s medical records and financial information.
The man wasn’t a stranger.
He was someone who had been close enough to know exactly where to look.
Ellen began crying.
“I thought you didn’t love me anymore.”
Bear took her hand.
“I spent six weeks making you believe the worst thing possible.”
“I thought losing you would destroy me.”
Bear looked toward the river.
“I was terrified that keeping you close would put you in danger.”
Ellen leaned against him.
For the first time that night, the bikers stepped away and gave them privacy.
Then Bear removed the real wedding ring from his vest.
He slipped it back onto his finger.
Twenty-eight years.
Still there.
Still theirs.
Ellen laughed through her tears.
“You could have told me.”
“I know.”
“That was a terrible plan.”
Bear smiled.
“Probably.”
She looked at the river.
“At least tell me you didn’t really throw our marriage away.”
Bear shook his head.
“Never.”
Behind them, twelve Harley engines slowly came to life.
The sound rolled across the riverfront.
But Ellen no longer heard it as something frightening.
She heard it as twelve men keeping watch.
And as Bear wrapped his arm around her, she finally understood why he’d allowed the entire world to believe their marriage was ending.
Sometimes…
the person who looks like he’s walking away…
is actually the one fighting hardest to keep you safe.
