PART 3 — THE LETTER INSIDE THE PRAYER BOX
The church secretary unlocked the small prayer room behind the sanctuary.
Hammer stood quietly near the doorway.
“I left something here years ago,” he said.
Pastor Ellis opened the old prayer box.
Inside lay hundreds of folded requests.
Near the bottom rested a yellow envelope.
The handwriting had faded.
Across the front were four words.
If Someone Needs Me.
Inside was a letter.
Emily had written it two weeks before she died.
“Gabriel,
You always think you have to fix motorcycles before people.
One day someone will need your hands more than another engine.
If I’m ever gone, promise me you’ll keep showing up.”
Hammer swallowed.
“I almost didn’t come today.”
Everyone looked at him.
“My bike had a transmission problem this morning.”
“I almost stayed home.”
He smiled sadly.
“Emily would’ve been angry.”
Megan wiped away tears.
“Why?”
“Because Jacob would’ve died.”
Three days later Jacob woke in intensive care.
His first visitor wasn’t family.
It was Hammer.
Jacob laughed weakly.
“You interrupted my wedding.”
Hammer nodded.
“I know.”
“You owe me another one.”
“I figured.”
Jacob reached into the bedside drawer.
“I’d like you to stand beside me this time.”
Hammer looked confused.
“My father passed away years ago.”
“I don’t have anyone to walk beside me.”
The huge biker couldn’t answer.
He simply nodded.
One month later the church filled again.
The flowers were fresh.
The music began once more.
This time Hammer sat quietly in the front row.
Until Megan stopped the ceremony.
She turned toward him.
“No.”
“Not there.”
She pointed beside Jacob.
“Right here.”
The congregation stood as the tattooed biker walked to the altar.
Many remembered judging him.
None were ashamed to applaud now.
But before the vows began…
Hammer removed Emily’s hospital bracelet.
For the first time in fourteen years.
He wrapped it gently around the bouquet.
