Wheel of Fortune’ Player Misses Out On $54K After Failing To Solve This Hard Puzzle

Fans of Wheel of Fortune were left stunned—and in some cases shouting at their screens—after contestants struggled to identify what many viewers considered an easy and widely recognized phrase during a recent episode.

The March 12 broadcast featured three competitors: kindergarten teacher Hollie Whistance from Tulsa, sanitation worker Frankie Sciortino of Staten Island, and Sue Chong from La Crescenta, California. The early rounds saw a fairly even match, with each contestant picking up momentum at different points in the game.

Whistance got off to a strong start by solving the opening toss-up puzzle, while Sciortino quickly answered the next one, keeping the competition tight. As the game progressed, Sciortino briefly stumbled on a “Pet Peeve” category puzzle, offering an incorrect guess before eventually landing on the correct phrase and taking the lead.

Chong soon surged ahead after solving a puzzle that earned her a European vacation, boosting her total and putting pressure on her opponents. The game tightened again during the Triple Toss-Up round, where Sciortino gained ground and closed the gap to just a few hundred dollars.

But it was the final puzzle that truly grabbed viewers’ attention.

Under the category “On the Dance Floor,” contestants were presented with a phrase that quickly had fans at home yelling the answer. Despite several guesses referencing the iconic 1990s hit, none of the players were able to correctly identify the full phrase right away.

Even as letters began to fill in, the contestants offered variations tied to the song Macarena, including partial guesses that came close—but not close enough. The correct answer, “Hey Macarena!,” remained elusive until the final moments, annoying viewers who saw it as an obvious solution.

Social media quickly lit up with reactions. Many fans joked that they were practically performing the dance moves in their living rooms while shouting the answer at their TVs. Others said they couldn’t believe such a well-known phrase went unrecognized for so long.

Despite the missed opportunity, the game continued to deliver drama. Sciortino finished with $14,000, while Chong edged out the win with $14,764, earning her a spot in the Bonus Round.

In the final segment, Chong selected a “Food & Drink” category. After receiving the standard set of letters and choosing a few additional ones, she was left with a puzzle that proved difficult to crack under pressure.

As the clock ticked down, Chong was unable to produce a guess. The correct answer—“Pickled Ginger”—was revealed after time expired, costing her a chance at a significantly larger payday. Inside the envelope was an additional $40,000, which would have brought her total winnings to more than $50,000.

Host Ryan Seacrest acknowledged the challenge of the final puzzle, noting that it wasn’t an easy one to piece together under time constraints.

Still, it was the earlier missed lyric that had fans talking most. For many longtime viewers, the moment served as a reminder that even the most familiar phrases can slip away under the bright lights of the game show stage.
